Anne Innis Dagg
In 1956, Dr. Anne Innis Dagg became the first Western researcher to study any mammal in the wild in Africa. She is still known as one of the foremost experts on giraffes.
When Dr. Anne Innis Dagg first encountered a giraffe at the zoo as a young girl, she quickly became enamoured with them. After completing a master’s degree in genetics in 1956 from the University of Toronto, Dagg travelled to South Africa to study giraffes. She initially had difficulty finding a place to stay because she was an unmarried woman travelling alone. In 1976, Dagg published her first book on giraffes, co-authored with Bristol Foster. Zoologists still consider this book to be a seminal text and Dagg as a leading authority on giraffes. Dagg struggled to receive a permanent teaching position despite being well qualified. She later advocated for gender equality, particularly in academia.
