Operation Soap: The police raids that targeted Toronto’s queer community in the 1980s

On 5 February 1981, 200 police officers performed a series of coordinated raids on four bathhouses in downtown Toronto, which they called “Operation Soap.” The raids marked a turning point for Toronto’s queer community, sparking protests against derogatory treatment from the police, media and the public.
