Sealing captain, sailing master and true Canadian hero William Jackman rescued stranded shipwreck passengers at Spotted Island Harbour, Labrador. Having sought refuge from fierce gales on Spotted Island himself, Jackman witnessed the wrecking of the Sea Clipper about 600 feet from shore. He swam through treacherous seas and saved all 27 on board. Jackman was presented with the Royal Humane Society Medal in 1868 for his deed.
