The Hudson’s Bay Company gave roughly 185,000 km² to Lord Selkirk for the formation of a colony at Red River. His first settlers arrived several months later, too late to plant crops and unprepared to feed themselves through the winter. Despite hardships, Selkirk’s settlers were the first Europeans to establish permanent residency along the Red River in what became the city of Winnipeg.
