Encounters with Canada is Canada’s largest youth forum, providing students aged 14 to 17 years the opportunity to visit Ottawa and participate in themed weeks.  The Manager of Operations, Encounters with Canada will be an individual who is passionate about the work of Historica Canada, has had experience working with a team to achieve deliverables in a timely fashion and is enthusiastic about celebrating and promoting the stories of Canada’s cultural and linguistic diversity. The successful candidate is organized, detail-oriented, flexible and a strong communicator.

The responsibilities of the Manager of Operations, Encounters with Canada include:

  • Coordinate and execute the development and implementation of the weekly programs at Encounters with Canada, based on the agreed-upon weekly themes;
  • Train and supervise the work of EWC programming coordinator staff;
  • Assist the Director with hiring, recruitment and evaluation of program and operations staff;
  • Along with the Program Coordinator, organize speakers, visits and resource people from the local community to be part of the program curriculum and weekend/evening social and cultural activities;
  • Oversee the bookings of daily transportation for participants, to and from the airport and program activities;
  • Working with the Director, EWC oversee the running of the Historica Canada Youth Centre, including visitor services and catering;
  • Evaluate and oversee the work of approximately 162 teacher-monitors annually;
  • Seek new program contacts and maintain partnerships with existing ones.
  • Work with transportation staff, as necessary to ensure smooth communication as students arrive and depart from the Centre;
  • Together with programing/recruitment staff, provide on-call support to the transportation staff and travel agency implant on weekends during the program, as necessary;
  • Manage the daily expenditures for the programming and operations budgets at Encounters with Canada with the Director, EWC and the finance team;
  • Help with the creation of quarterly activity reports, forecasts and budgets for program funders, in conjunction with the Director, EWC and under the supervision of the Director of Programs and Education;
  • Represent the organization at various events, as requested by senior management;
  • This position may require working night and weekends on occasion
  • Complete other duties, as assigned by the senior management team.


  • A completed certificate or degree or relevant education and experience;
  • English/French bilingualism is required in this position;
  • Minimum 4 years professional working experience with a minimum of 2 years as a Program Manager;
  • Experience working with overnight camps, youth forums, or other youth residential programs a significant asset; Strong budgeting skills are required (including the creation of forecasts, the monitoring of expenditures, the preparation of cash flows and other financial reports). Experience working with restricted funds is strongly preferred;
  • Extensive leadership or supervisory experience;
  • Self-motivated, self-starter, comfortable working independently or as part of a team;
  • Experience in conducting outreach and promotional campaigns, especially to schools and youth;
  • Excellent research and writing skills;
  • Knowledge of Canadian history and an interest in questions around Canadian identity and cultural heritage;
  • Exceptional organization and time management skills;
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office suite).

This is a permanent position.  The annual salary will be between $65,000 to $70,000 (depending on experience) less applicable statutory deductions which will be paid to the successful candidate twice a month.
