Storytelling initiative celebrates Toronto’s Asian Heritage with tasty tales of food and community
TORONTO, May 19, 2015— Four storytellers, four dishes to sample, and four tasty tales of food and its power to shape culture, community, and identity. On Tuesday May 19th, Torontonians joined Passages Canada at Daniels Spectrum for Stories that Nourish, an evening of listening, tasting and storytelling to celebrate Asian Heritage Month, and the launch of Passages Canada’s new video series.
The audience heard compelling personal tales of food and culture from an all-star lineup of local chefs, foodies and writers including Nota Bene Executive Chef David Lee; Chinatown historian Arlene Chan; and writer, restaurateur, and social activist Sang Kim. Attendees also got the first glimpse of Passages Canada’s new promotional videos, highlighting the immigration stories of everyday people – including the story of entrepreneur Jason Lee, whose family emigrated from South Korea in the 1970s and started one of the first restaurants in Toronto’s Korea Town.

Passages Canada is a national storytelling program of Historica Canada that nurtures cross-cultural dialogue in Canadian communities. Our volunteer speakers share their personal experiences of identity, culture and immigration with groups of all ages. Passages Canada is generously funded by TD Bank Group and Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
