10 ADELAIDE STREET EAST, SUITE 400,
TORONTO, ON, CANADA M5C 1J3
On September 10, 1939 Canada declared war on Germany propelling Canadians into the Second World War. Today seven veterans share their experiences, as part of a national veteran initiative, of where they were when the declaration of war was made.
Now available online at www.thememoryproject.com/september10, veterans recall the stories of joining the air force on a lunch break and hearing of the declaration while attending high school. Each of these recollections shed a personal light on an event deeply ingrained in our national memory. The stories also provide a preview of the archive being collected through The Memory Project: Stories of the Second World War, an initiative of the Dominion Institute.
The initiative is dedicated to creating an unprecedented record of Canada’s participation in the Second World War as told through the first-person narrative of thousands of servicemen and women. The Institute will provide every living Second World War veteran with the opportunity to preserve their memories through recorded interviews and digitized memorabilia. Once completed, these stories will be available for teachers, students and all Canadians, in both official languages, through the Memory Project Digital Archive website. This archive will help inspire Canadians to learn more about Canada’s military history, and the stories of the honourable sacrifices made by fallen and surviving veterans.
The Dominion Institute was founded in 1997 and has focused its efforts on conducting original research into Canadians’ knowledge of the country’s past and building innovative programs – such as The Memory Project – that broaden appreciation of the richness and complexity of the Canadian story. Visit www.dominion.ca for more information.
The Memory Project: Stories of the Second World War is made possible through a contribution from the Government of Canada through the Celebrations and Commemorations Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage.
