Rick Mercer, OC is host of CBC Television’s Rick Mercer Report that will start its 14th season in October, 2016. Rick launched his television career in 1993 in This Hour Has 22 Minutes and went on to the satirical dramatic series Made in Canada. His 2001 CBC TV special Talking To Americans broke ratings records. For the past two seasons Rick hosted the annual Giller Awards on CBC Television and in 2014 he and Jann Arden hosted The Canadian Country Music Awards.
On July 1, 2014 it was announced that Rick has made an Officer of the Order of Canada.
In 2015 he won the Canadian Screen Award for ‘Best Performance in a Variety or Sketch Comedy Program or Series,’ adding to nearly thirty such awards in performance or writing categories.
Rick’s topical weekly rants from The Mercer Report have been published in two best-selling collections, the most recent is 2013’s A Nation Worth Ranting About.
In 2003 he went to Afghanistan to entertain the troops and tape ‘Rick Mercer’s Christmas in Kabul’ special for CBC Television. He has returned there twice to visit the Canadian Forces.
In 2006 Rick and Belinda Stronach launched Spread the Net, a charity campaign that continues to raises funds that provide mosquito nets for African children. The recipient of many awards for his humanitarian work, in May Rick received the Stanley Knowles Humanitarian Award from the Ontario Public Service Employees Union and he was inducted into the Canadian Disability Hall of Fame in November.
