Richmond Students Beat Over 1,000 Classrooms to Win Citizenship Challenge

March 27, 2017

Historica Canada would like to congratulate students from W.D. Ferris Elementary School who won the Citizenship Challenge’s 2016 Class Grand Prize.

Richmond – March 27, 2017 — Historica Canada would like to congratulate students from W.D. Ferris Elementary School who won the Citizenship Challenge’s 2016 Class Grand Prize. Jean-Ann Stene’s grade 7 class beat out more than 1,000 classrooms to win the national contest. More than 88,000 Canadians participated in this year’s edition.

A special Citizenship Celebration was held in honour of the winners. 550 students gathered to hear Memory Project speaker Jack Purdie and Passages Canada speaker Raz Chan share their views on the importance of active citizenship.

The 30 students from the winning class participated in a Citizenship Bingo Game to further demonstrate their Canadian knowledge and civic pride. Then, in a school wide assembly over 500 students took part in a Citizenship Reaffirmation Ceremony.

“The Citizenship Challenge lets participants see how their knowledge of this country measures up against fellow Canadians,” said Anthony Wilson-Smith, President and CEO of Historica Canada. “These young students do Richmond proud – and set them on course to be active, engaged citizens in years to come.”

The Citizenship Challenge asks Canadians to put their national knowledge to the test, by studying for and writing a mock citizenship exam. Do you believe all Canadians should be ready to answer the same questions about their country as new Canadians? We do. The program is made possible through funding from the Government of Canada.
