Beginning her professional tennis career at 15, Bassett quickly emerged as Canada's premier tennis player.

Carling Bassett came to tennis naturally. Her father John played for Canada’s 1959 Davis Cup team, so when his daughter showed flashes of on-court brilliance, he took her to Nick Bollettieri’s fabled Florida academy. By 14 she was Canada’s junior champion and the following year she became the world’s top-ranked junior. Carling’s monster backhand and fearless drive helped her rank as high as eight on the Women’s Tennis Association tour. She was one of the most successful female tennis players in Canada’s history.

She was a Footprint on the baseline of Canadian sport.
