Corner Brook student wins $500 grand prize in national Citizenship Challenge contest

June 20, 2018

More than 170,000 Canadians participated in the Challenge

CORNER BROOK, NL, June 20, 2018 - Kevin MacKenzie, a grade 9 French Immersion student at Corner Brook Intermediate School, topped thousands of students across Canada to win one of two grand prizes in the Citizenship Challenge contest, a program of Historica Canada.

This year, over 170,000 Canadians from across the country participated in the Citizenship Challenge, a contest that asks Canadians to test their national knowledge by studying for and writing a mock citizenship exam in French or English. Questions are based on the real citizenship test newcomers take on their path to citizenship. Participating students between the ages of 12-18 were eligible to win the grand prize.

Kevin MacKenzie scored 100% on the Citizenship Challenge, greatly exceeding the average score of 70%. He enjoys math and social studies and wants to become a structural engineer. Kevin will take home a $500 gift card to Air Canada.

“Our Citizenship Challenge is based on questions from the tests given to newcomers, and they really do provide a challenge. The fact that Kevin scored such superb results is a tribute to his hard work, dedication, and commitment to learning more about our country,” said Anthony Wilson-Smith, President and CEO of Historica Canada.

The Citizenship Challenge invites Canadians of all ages to test their national knowledge by taking a mock citizenship exam in either official language. Since 2010, over 509,000 Canadians have taken the Challenge.

Historica Canada offers programs that you can use to explore, learn and reflect on our history, and what it means to be Canadian.
