30 Inuktitut Words for Snow and Ice
To celebrate its 30th anniversary, The Canadian Encyclopedia created 30 lists of 30 things that make us proud to be Canadian, from famous people and historic events, to iconic foods and influential artists.
It is often said that the Inuit have dozens of words to refer to snow and ice (see Inuktitut Words for Snow and Ice). In 2010, a lexicon of sea ice terminology in Nunavik, Siku: Knowing Our Ice, included no fewer than 93 different words. No matter the type of term it uses to refer to a particular type of snow or ice, Inuktitut has a far superior ability to distinguish between them than most languages (see Aboriginal Languages of Canada). Below is a list of 30 Inuktitut words for snow and ice that the Encyclopedia has generated to help celebrate its 30th anniversary.
