Many of the place names that are truly unique to Canada are derived from various Aboriginal languages. Most of these names describe an outstanding physical characteristic of a place, while others denote a significant incident, activity, band or tribe. Below is a list of 30 Indigenous place names and their meanings that the Encyclopedia has compiled to help celebrate its 30th anniversary.
